Abstract

Octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine(HMX) is a high explosive. Nano-structured HMX is prepared by a new process. The appearance of the sample is observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), it is found that the structure of HMX particles is necklace-like. The results are suggested that average content of the HMX is 88%, measured by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). Thermogravimetry and Differential Scanning Calorimetric (TG-DSC) is used to determine the thermal property of the sample and the results show that the decomposition of HMX takes place at the temperature of 276.1¡æ, approximately 6¡æ shift toward low temperature region compared with raw micron HMX. X-ray diffraction (XRD) result reveals that the diffraction peaks of nano-structured HMX are weakened compared with those of micron HMX, and the corrected average crystallite size is 40~60 nm based on the Scherrer formula.
